ELIZABETH – Mayor J. Christian Bollwage will face a challenge in the June primary election.
Edward Bryant Koon, a juvenile detention officer at the Union County Juvenile Detention Center in Elziabeth, filed his petition Monday to run against the four-term mayor.
Koon, who is running on a slate with current school board President Armando Da Silva, said that crime and taxes in the city are too high and that the current administration doesn’t embrace the population’s diversity.
Da Silva, Samuel Rodriguez and George O’Grady are running for the three city council at-large seats on Koon’s slate, “Democratic Change for Elizabeth.” Bollwage and current council members Edward Jackus, Patricia Perkins and Frank J. Cuesta have the support of the Democratic Party organization.
Bollwage said that he believes “the city is moving in the right direction.”
No Republicans filed to run for local office in Elizabeth, so the June 3 Democratic Primary will effectively determine who will be the city’s mayor next year.
