ELIZABETH—Crime is shaping up as a hot issue in the upcoming primary election for mayor, where a county law enforcement officer is challenging Mayor Chris Bollwage, who is hoping to win a fifth term that will give him 20 years in the office.

Hoping to diffuse the potential impact of his inaction on some high profile cases, Bollwage has attempted to place blame on Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.

Romankow responded by saying Bollwage needs a lesson in justice in a democracy.

ELIZABETH—While Mayor Chris Bollwage blames Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow for inaction on a series of murders in the city, minority activists say politics is the real culprit.

There were 55 murders in Elizabeth during the past three years, but police have solved fewer than half.

Many of the slaying victims were black, including a 13-year-old boy who was gunned down in November.

RAHWAY – The Rahway Center Partnership’s annual Hot Rods & Harleys day is planned for Saturday, May 17. This year’s event will be the biggest ever, with more classic cars, more motorcycles, two stunt shows by Harley-Davidson American Daredevil Bubba Blackwell plus and extended care and motorcycle display area.

RAHWAY – Anne Nelson of Rahway was celebrated for serving 15,000 volunteer hours at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Rahway.

Nelson, a retired accountant, has been donating her time and talent to the hospital since 1986. She also volunteers at Rutgers University. Her services to the hospital include help in the Emergency Center, as well as serving as a hospital ambassador on weekends, helping family members find their way around the hospital.

RAHWAY – For the past 14 years, Clark Resident Walter O’Brien has spent one hour three times a week at the cardiac rehabilitation program at the Nicholas Quadrel Healthy Heart Center for Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation. His loyal participation earned him a special distinction: the first to log 1,500 hours at the center.

“This is such a good program,” O’Brien said as he received a special recognition at the program’s 19th annual pinning ceremony for rehabilitation center graduates. “The nurses are so great. They make me want to come back.”

RAHWAY – Traffic patterns are changing because of downtown Rahway’s transformation. On or around May 15, Irving and Main streets will become open to two-way traffic.

Linden Parks Opening For Spring

LINDEN—The Linden Department of Recreation and Community Services has announced that five parks will open early this spring for Linden youth to enjoy informal activities and programs from May 19 through June 19.

Wilson, Knosky, Milkosky, St. Marks and Sunnyside parks will be in operation, Monday through Friday, from 5 until 8 p.m. The programs will include: basketball, paddle tennis, volleyball and court games. All playgrounds are supervised and registration will be required. (more…)

Money Matters

Money Matters—Students in David Antunes’s third grade class at Franklin Elementary School in Rahway got a lesson on budgeting their money. A representative from Washington Mutual Bank of Rahway showed students the difference between what you want and what you need. Students then created a budget to buy both the things that they wanted and the things that they needed. GARWOOD—Erin Macee Callahan of Linden has been selected as “Teen Volunteer of the Year” by The Center of Hope Hospice & Palliative Care in Scotch Plains. They held their annual volunteer awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 16, at the Westwood in Garwood. This year’s theme was “It Must Be Love” and there were over 175 in attendance.

Callahan has been affiliated with the center since 2002 and continues to be an active volunteer. She is currently an 8th grader at the McManus Middle School where she is on the Principal’s Honor Roll In September, Callahan will be attending the Union County Magnet High School.

CARTERET—Beginning on May 19 and continuing through June 1, 2008, the Carteret Police Department and police departments throughout the state will be stepping up enforcement and education of New Jersey’s seat belt laws. This campaign ties into a nationwide mobilization effort known as “Click It or Ticket”.

The unified goal of the program is to increase seat belt usage across the state and the nation. Last year the seat belt usage rate in New Jersey increased for the eleventh consecutive year and now stands at 91.4%. This year the goal is to increase New Jersey’s rate to at least 93%.

CLARK—On Saturday, April 19, three members of the ALJ Puppetry Club went with club advisor San D Hassselman to The College of New Jersey. Ashley Gallagher, a graduate of Arthur L. Johnson, and a member of TCNJ’s Theater Honor Society, coordinated the workshop.

Hasselman introduced the TCNJ students to the history and “vocabulary” of puppetry. The Honor Society learned about the different types of puppets and how to integrate puppetry into theater works. She spoke about current Broadway productions which incorporate puppetry, including “The Lion King”, “Avenue Q”, and “The Thirty Nine Steps.” ALJ Puppetry Club members, Denise Villalva, Michael Franke and Harrison Haney then demonstrated big mouth puppet techniques to the participants of the workshop.
