Street Named In Honor Of Fallen Soldier

May 28, 2008 by cmdmedia

CLARK – On Memorial Day, township officials named a street in honor of a soldier killed in the Iraq conflict.

Army Pfc. Stephen C. Benish was killed near Ramadi, Iraq, in November 2004 after he was hit by insurgent gunfire while on foot patrol. The 20-year-old soldier grew up in Clark and graduated from Arthur L. Johnson High School.

The new street, Benish Court, is part of a new housing development off of Raritan Road.

According to Bill Duffy, a retired Clark police officer and membership director of the local American Legion, Benish is the 10th soldier to have a township street named after him. A 1995 ordinance requires all new Clark streets to be named after soldiers who were killed in action. Duffy hopes to have brass plaques with a short biography of each soldier attached to the poll that holds each street sign.
