Officers Arrest Grieving Family Members During Wake
ELIZABETH – City police are still searching for suspects in the slaying of 20-year-old Curtis Theodore, the eighth person to be killed in Elizabeth this year.
Theodore, a letter carrier with the Scotch Plains Post Office, was shot in the back of the head while at the wheel of his 1998 Ford Taurus. Police discovered his body at 5:40 a.m. on Friday, June 13.

OTTAWA, Canada – Colonia’s Jeff Carlson was selected in the first round of the NHL Draft last Friday by the Washington Capitals. The 6-2, 212-pound defenseman was chosen with the 27th overall pick.
Carlson, who was born in Natick, Mass., moved to Colonia when he was 5. He played one season at St. Joseph’s of Metuchen and played youth hockey with the New Jersey Rockets.

LINDEN – City Council members approved a slightly revised $92.4 million 2008 budget last week, a month after rejecting a proposed $92.6 million budget. It would increase taxes by $277.55 for the average city homeowner.
The latest budget, which passed on first reading 8-1 on June 17, cuts $154,796 from the original proposal that the council rejected. Lawmakers said the budget’s long-term impact, which will benefit from the consolidation of several city departments, will provide Linden with a stable financial foundation for the future.

RAHWAY – Police arrested three men Friday who were charged with burglarizing a Midwood Drive home.
Twenty-seven year-old Fords resident Brian Jenkins was arrested after he jumped from the home’s second floor landing, Lt. Joseph Simonetti said, while members of the Rahway SWAT team had to bring out the other two men, Woodbridge resident Donald Russel, 21, and Rahway resident Etay Robinson, 20.

STATE—New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS), a division of New York Blood Center, is issuing a public appeal for blood due to critically low supplies in area hospitals.
New Jersey Blood Services, which supplies blood services and products to 60 hospitals throughout the state, says that the need for blood has increased beyond seasonal expectations.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY— Local communities throughout Middlesex County are planning concerts, festivals and fireworks displays to celebrate Independence Day.
Sayreville will celebrate on Saturday, June 28, with a festival and fireworks at Kennedy Park, 820 Washington Road. The festival will run from 4-9 p.m., with rides, carnival games, a hot dog eating contest and apple pie bakeoff among the events planned. ELIZABETH—For the first time since 2000, the Elmora Youth League won the city’s annual Mayor’s Cup Tournament. Each year, all star teams from the city’s three youth baseball organizations – the Elmora Youth League, North Elizabeth League and Elizabethport League—play for the cup and “bragging rights.”

ELIZABETH –Freeholder Chairman Angel G. Estrada and Union County Human Services Director Frank Guzzo have been recognized with a 2008 Annual Founder’s Day Award by the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless, in honor of their work in bringing “Code Blue” to Union County.
Code Blue is an emergency program that helps provide immediate shelter to the homeless in extreme cold.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, the “solution” touted by some candidates is a “gas tax holiday,” a proposal to eliminate the federal gas tax for a few months, saving the average driver approximately 25 dollars. Thankfully, many critics have risen to the fore to attack the “solution” as a politically expedient, short-sighted meaningless proposal. While the presidential candidates have been talking about making our nation less dependent on foreign oil, the serious talk about how to go about doing so has been sorely lacking.

Vacant School Board Property in Woodbridge Township to Remain as Open Space

I am please to report that the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders have approved the purchase of two tracts of undeveloped land in Woodbridge Township as part of Middlesex County’s and Woodbridge Township’s open space land preservation program. The county-sponsored open space land purchase will add more than ten acres to Woodbridge Township’s open space and environmental resource inventory – currently in excess of 286 preserved open space acres – will expand the county-owned Merrill Park with additional recreational open space, and will curtail any future development next to Indiana Avenue School #18 in Iselin and near the Woodbridge High School.

Musing the inevitable inquiry–“What’s better, ‘Iron Man’ or ‘The Incredible Hulk?’”–a comic book of the mind transports me back to a couple of ten-year-olds who could give that weighty question its deserved contemplation. Gamboling along the idyllic itinerary that was the way home from Saturday’s matinee, such stuff was mulled. It could prompt bold decisions: “Next time, when the giant ants (‘Them’–1954) come on, we’re looking!”
