ELIZABETH – United Way of Greater Union County has partnered with the County of Union Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Department of Human Services to respond to a rising shortage of supplies in local food pantries.
“We’ve reached out to our partners, who range from small mom and pop stores to some of the county’s largest employers, and have received an overwhelming response. But much more needs to be done, and we will continue to reach out to more and more people,” stated James W. Horne, Jr., CEO of United Way of Greater Union County.
United Way is mobilizing its resources and its community partners in a massive effort to collect supplies to restock the food pantries that serve Union County.
“This effort builds on Union County’s Adopt-a-Food-Pantry drive earlier this summer, which enlisted schools to help gather supplies,” said Angel Estrada, Chairman of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. “We will continue to expand Adopt-a-Food-Pantry in the fall. With our schools, businesses, and residents all working together, we can help our neighbors through these tough times.”
To date, over a dozen of United Way’s partners—including Arbitron, NuStar Energy, Neiman Marcus, Glimcher Realty, Williams Gas Pipeline, Investors Savings Bank, Linde, Planet Honda, Maxon Hyundai, and Ray Catena Mercedes Benz—have contributed in this effort and are conducting food drives in their places of business. This has resulted in hundred of pounds of donated food to some of our local food pantries such as Jefferson Park Ministries, Elizabeth Coalition, Catholic Charities, Community Foodbank of New Jersey, Rahway Food 4 Friends, and Elizabethport Presbyterian.
