Fire Officials Educate Students About Safety

October 20, 2008 by cmdmedia

EDISON— Lt. Scott Boland and firefighter Dan Maurath spoke to students from Wardlaw-Hartridge’s Lower School on Tuesday, Oct. 7, to educate them about fire safety. The assembly was organized by teacher Ellen Ritz.

Maurath and Boland reminded the students to call 9-1-1 in case of emergency, never play with matches, never play in the kitchen, never put anything in wall sockets and to diligently change smoke detectors in their homes. They also posed several “what would you do?” situations to the students, who proved by their answers that they are prepared and aware of what to do in case of a fire.

During the presentation, Maurath donned 60 pounds of firefighter gear and tools for the students while Boland answered questions from the audience which shed light on some interesting facts about how fires are started and that carbon monoxide detectors should be placed on every level of a house.

Next, the students were shown more of the fire equipment inside the fire truck, which was parked in the front of the Lower School. Hoses and thermal infrared imaging cameras were of particular interest to the students who truly appreciated the visit from their new firefighting friends.
