Last week, I reported that Assemblyman Joseph Cryan is abusing his legislative office by having government staff perform work related to his capacity as state Democratic Party chairman.

Freeholder John D’Amico Jr. said communication with the office of Assemblyman Joseph Cryan from someone on the Monmouth County Democrats’ transition team regarding county government jobs was “wrong.”

STATE – A recently released federal study estimates that 32 million adults in the United States – about one in seven – lack basic literacy skills. They would find it challenging to read this newspaper article or figure out a bill.

“They really cannot read … paragraphs (or) sentences that are connected,” says Sheida White, a U.S. Education Department researcher.

The new findings are from the department’s National Assessment of Adult Literacy, a survey of more than 19,000 Americans ages 16 and older. The 2003 survey is a follow-up to a similar one in 1992.

TRENTON–Residents facing foreclosure can visit http://www.nj.gov/foreclosuremediation/ for more information and call a hotline at 1-888-989-5277. The hotline is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The program is a partnership of the Judiciary, the Office of the Attorney General, the Housing & Mortgage Finance Agency, Legal Services of New Jersey, the Office of the Public Advocate and the Department of Banking and Insurance.

“New Jersey families who are in jeopardy of losing their home now will have resources at their fingertips to legally stop foreclosure proceedings,” said Assemblyman Jerry Green (D-Union).  “The mediation program will provide counseling services to struggling families to help them renegotiate the terms of their mortgage and keep their home.”
