ELIZABETH—The Emergency Department physicians of Trinitas Regional Medical Center offer the following suggestions for being safe during severe cold weather.

There are big health risks to infants, the elderly, travelers and pets when the temperature drops to freezing and below; especially when the temperature is in the 20’s, teens or single digits.

TRENTON—Recently, Gov. Jon Corzine and the New Jersey State Legislature revised the New Jersey Student Tuition Assistance Rewards Scholarship (NJ STARS) and NJ STARS II scholarship programs to ensure their long-term viability.

Students graduating high school in 2009 in the top 15 percent of their class will be academically eligible for the scholarship in the fall 2009 semester, provided they pass the community college placement test or have an equivalent SAT score.

Legendary coach Bob Hurley of St. Anthony’s in Jersey City is often asked why he does not move up to the college ranks.  He always replies, “I am a high school coach.”  Union County College women’s basketball coach Cheryl Bell can relate because she is a big proponent of a junior college education.  JUCO worked for her and is working for the young women at the Cranford campus.

You probably never heard of Bell, but the head coach for the Union County College Owls women’s basketball team is quickly building a dynasty at the Cranford Campus.  How? By winning.  With an 11-0 record this year, the Lady Owls are looking to three-peat as the Garden State Athletic Conference and Region XVIIII champs.

CLARK – P.B.A. Local #125 and American Legion Post #328 will host a benefit for 4-year-old Clark resident Jason Greenbush on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Arthur L. Johnson High School on Westfield Avenue.

Greenbush has been diagnosed with a serious medical condition.

Giving Back To The Community—Waliyy Dixon, a 1992 Linden High School All State Basketball honoree and a Street and Smith Magazine All American H.S. Basketball Player, came home to Linden on Jan. 3, to sponsor a free basketball skills & drills clinic in co-operation with the Linden P.A.L. and The Linden Department of Public Property and Community Services.  Known as “THE MAIN EVENT” in the AND1 Circle, Dixon is pictured above with some of the 200 plus youngsters of all ages who attended the clinic.  He was a 2008 inductee into the Linden Athletic Hall of Fame and is a national street ball legend.
