cold_thermometerNEWARK—PSE&G, New Jersey’s largest electric and gas utility, is closely monitoring weather conditions and preparing for frigid temperatures expected in our region over the next several days. The utility will have extra personnel and supplies on hand to ensure that electric and gas weather-related emergencies are handled safely and promptly.

On a typical winter day, PSE&G receives 2,000 calls from customers without heat. With this week’s forecasted low temperatures, the utility anticipates an exceptionally high number of calls from customers with insufficient or no heat.

Blood Supply Tips Into Danger Zone

STATE—New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS), a division of New York Blood Center, has issued an emergency appeal for blood donations.

Hospital demand for blood (needed for emergency care and surgery) has increased beyond seasonal expectations while levels of blood donation have been below forecast.  Blood supplies have dropped below the five-day safety level, and for some types of blood are at a less than two-day level. Some rationing of supply has been imposed upon the 200 hospitals served by NYBC and its regional operations, including 60 throughout New Jersey served by NJBS.

Even after all my time spent as an elected official in Middlesex County, I still find myself humbled and greatly touched by the generosity of my constituency.  As some of you may have seen on the news and in the papers recently, local food banks and charitable organizations have been running low on food and other supplies.  The current state of the economy has forced more and more New Jerseyans to rely on these services. And if the needs of our neighbors continue to grow, these charitable organizations will need to rely more and more on help from their local communities.
