WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two Linden residents who are cadets at the Virginia Military Institute had the opportunity to participate in the 2009 Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. this week.

Gregory S. Lum and Patrick K. Terhune were part of the VMI contingent. It is the 13th time in school history that cadets from VMI marched in a Presidential Inaugural Parade. The first was in 1909, when President William Howard Taft was sworn in.

ELIZABETH – Elizabeth High School, he largest in the state, will be split into six smaller academies in September, according to plans announced at last week’s school board meeting.

The move is intended to boost test scores and guide the city’s 5,300 public high school students onto career paths, district officials said.

School officials will present the plan to the public on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. in the high school’s Dwyer Auditorium.

Through its various departments, Middlesex County offers a wide range of programs and services to the more than 780,000 residents that live here.

As Freeholder Chair of the County’s Public Health and Education Committee, I plan to explore, through a monthly column, the many offerings of the Middlesex County Public Health Department. It is my hope that by doing so, you, our residents, will be better informed about the opportunities available and the ways we can work together to improve our individual and collective health.

MOUNTAINSIDE—The Union County Baseball Association will induct four new members into the Union County Baseball Hall of Fame during award ceremonies on Sunday, Feb. 8. The four inductees will be honored for their outstanding contributions to our national pastime on the baseball diamonds of Union County.

Anthony Candelino of Elizabeth, Ben Candelino of Elizabeth, Dom Guida of Summit, and Bill Howard of Berkeley Heights will be honored at the 73rd Annual Hot Stove League Baseball Dinner which begins at 1 p.m. at the L’Affaire Banquet Center, 1099 Route 22 East, Mountainside. The dinner is sponsored by the Union County Baseball Association, in cooperation with the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Union County Department of Parks and Community Renewal.

LINDEN – Registration has begun for this summer’s popular city day camp program. The camps will be open from June 29 through Aug. 20, operating from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

For the first time, the $200 per child camp fee can be paid in monthly installments of $50 or all at once.

Parents can register their children online at the city website, http://www.linden-nj.org, using the CommunityPass feature. The registration can be paid with a Visa or MasterCard credit card. Parents may also register their children in person at any of the city’s recreation centers during normal operating hours.
