HAMILTON – Mirroring the national trend, New Jersey motorists drove more than 2.3 billion fewer miles from January through November 2008 compared to the same period a year earlier, registering 361 million fewer miles in November alone.

Much cheaper gas prices appeared to play no role in the miles traveled decrease.

The November 2008 average for a gallon of regular serve gasoline was $2.08, 88 cents per gallon cheaper than the November 2007 average.

As Americans buckle down for what could be a severe recession, many state governments are scrambling to find ways to keep their economies afloat. Unfortunately, when it comes to economic freedom—a major component of a state’s business climate—New Jersey is falling far behind.

According to the U.S. Economic Freedom Index, a recent study published by the Pacific Research Institute in association with Forbes, New Jersey is among the least economically free states in the country. Although it often goes overlooked, the amount of economic freedom enjoyed by New Jerseyans will play a significant role in determining how much damage the ongoing recession will do.

(NAPSI)-Cutting expenses might be easier than you imagine. A few simple tips and tools can help you get the most out of your money:

• Feel the urge to go shopping? First, clean your closets. Separate clothes into piles to keep, donate, or sell on consignment. You may already have something similar to what you need. At the very least, you will get a better idea of what you need. This is especially important if you are paying storage costs.

• Don’t just buy the first thing you see. Compare prices and be alert to quality. Watch for seasonal sales at reliable shops.

TRENTON—The New Jersey Hall of Fame is calling for entries to its third annual essay contest, which is open to all New Jersey students in grades four through 12.

Students are asked to nominate potential inductees – living or dead – to the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Nominations can include famous people as well as ordinary citizens who do extraordinary things. Students should research or interview, if possible, the person they wish to nominate and write an essay no longer than 500 words.

Essays must be typed and double-spaced. The student must include his/her name, age, grade level as of April 1, address, phone number, parent/guardian’s name, school name, and school district. If the essay is a school project, the student should also include the name of the teacher who assigned the activity.
