“Cut-A-Thon” To Fight Cancer

May 14, 2009 by cmdmedia

UNION COUNTY—This year more than 45,000 New Jersey residents will be diagnosed with cancer.  In Union County alone, 53 people are diagnosed each week – that equals more than 2700 individuals annually, right here in our own community.

Six-year cancer survivor, Robin Brown, and her friends from flagship team, Kiss Away Cancer have joined the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life to make a huge difference in the fight against cancer.

“Suite: The Salon & Day Spa” along with Team Kiss Away Cancer will be hosting a five hour “Hair Cut-A-Thon” from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 7. The Suite is located at 105 South Avenue West, Cranford. All of proceeds raised that day will be collected by Kiss Away Cancer, and donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Clark.

The cost for hair cuts the day of the event is $30 for women, $20 for men and $10 for children.  No appointments are necessary for June 7.  New and existing Suite customers are welcome – haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. For information on the Suite / Kiss Away Cancer Cut-A-Thon, contact the salon at 908-272-3535.

In addition to the Cut-A-Thon, the public is invited to stop and visit Team Kiss Away Cancer on Saturday, May 16 at the Rahway Hot Rods & Harleys Street Festival from noon to 6 p.m. Team members along with ACS volunteers will be there to distribute information on Relay For Life to cancer survivors and potential new relay participants. Resources and information on ACS programs and services will also be available at the Kiss Away Cancer table.

This year, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is celebrating 25 years of hope and survivorship.  Volunteer team members take turns walking or running a track overnight to fight cancer.  The event opens with the Survivor Lap, as survivors of all forms of cancer are honored by the community, family and friends.  At nightfall, hundreds of luminary candles are lit, with each one symbolizing a loved one who won the fight against cancer, or honoring those lost to cancer.

The second annual Relay For Life of Clark will be held overnight, starting on Friday, June 12, at 6 p.m.  Information on Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society will also be available from Kiss Away Cancer at the Suite Salon the day of the Cut-A-Thon.  To volunteer for a Relay For Life event in your community, call the American Cancer Society at 973-736-7771 ext. 2005 or visit www.relayforlife.org/clarknj.
