CLARK—The Arthur L. Johnson High School DECA Team had eight of their students compete at the DECA State Conference in Cherry Hill.

DECA is an organization for business and marketing students where members compete against each other in over 15 different business fields such as restaurant management, hotel management, and accounting, to name a few. Competitions consist of a written-based exam in the student’s chosen event, and judged role-plays that test a student’s ability to respond quickly to different business situations.

Johnson Students Win Bartell Scholarships—Four students achieving high academic standing from Arthur L. Johnson High School were awarded Bartell Scholarships at the high school scholarship awards ceremony on June 2. The winner of the ALJ Entrepreneurial Award in memory of Leslie B. Bartell was Brittany Halpern (center). Winners of the Leslie Bartell Scholarship were Kevin Campbell (2nd from right) and Brittany Dolan (2nd from left), while the Bartell Scholarship in honor of former ALJ Marketing Teacher, Jack Ford, went to Vincent Del Vecchio (right.) The scholarships were established by the late Leslie Bartell, who owned Bartell Garden Supply Company since 1933. Richard Bartell (left), his son, presented each student with a $4,500 check toward college.

Bright Wins Helping Hands Home Care DECA Scholarship—Brittany Bright, a senior at Arthur L. Johnson High School won the Helping Hands Home Care DECA Scholarship Award. She received a $1,000 check from Robert D’Arienzo, a graduate of Arthur L. Johnson High School and former state DECA winner in 1992 and 1993. He is now the president of Helping Hands Home Care in Clark and attributes much of his success in business to the confidence he gained while taking part in DECA at ALJ. Bright will be attending Florida Southern University and majoring in accounting next fall.

CLARK – Arthur L. Johnson High School’s Student-of-the-Month for June is senior Katelyn Durkin.

Durkin was previously selected by Katrina Anderson-Dobbins as the Distinguished Student in the Field of Academics in English in February and was selected by the administration to receive the Crusader Award as a junior.

CLARK – John Monagle, a senior at Arthur L. Johnson High School, is at the head of an exclusive class. Monagle is one of only 12 seniors in the country to be named a “national” Toyota Community Scholar. More than 8,000 seniors were nominated by their schools from across the country.

The scholars program, now in its 12th year, honors the top 100 students in the U.S. who are proven leaders, both in the classroom and in the communities in which they live and serve. The scholarships are valued at $20,000 (for national winners like Monagle) or $10,000 each, over four years, for study at a four-year college or university starting in the fall of 2008.

CLARK—On Saturday, April 19, three members of the ALJ Puppetry Club went with club advisor San D Hassselman to The College of New Jersey. Ashley Gallagher, a graduate of Arthur L. Johnson, and a member of TCNJ’s Theater Honor Society, coordinated the workshop.

Hasselman introduced the TCNJ students to the history and “vocabulary” of puppetry. The Honor Society learned about the different types of puppets and how to integrate puppetry into theater works. She spoke about current Broadway productions which incorporate puppetry, including “The Lion King”, “Avenue Q”, and “The Thirty Nine Steps.” ALJ Puppetry Club members, Denise Villalva, Michael Franke and Harrison Haney then demonstrated big mouth puppet techniques to the participants of the workshop.

Astronaut Kenneth T. Ham will pilot the space shuttle Discovery next month on a mission to bring a Japanese science laboratory unit to the International Space Station. Ham, a 1983 graduate of Arthur L. Johnson High School, will be making his first space flight.

Ham, 43, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1987. He has flown combat missions over North Iraq and Bosnia during two deployments to the Mediterranean Sea and has been a test pilot. He joined NASA in 1998.

UNION COUNTY – The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders announced that four Union County school districts will participate in a pilot program for the “2nd Floor Youth Helpline,” a toll-free hotline for middle and high school students.

The 2nd Floor Youth Helpline will be available to students in Clark, Cranford, Rahway, and Union in mid-March. The helpline number is 888-222-2228. The hours of operation are 9 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
