New Jersey Faces Blood Shortage

STATE—Bracing for a sharp seasonal drop in the blood supply, New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS) is appealing to all eligible persons to donate blood in January, designated National Blood Donor Month.

January is always a critical time of the year for blood collections because traditionally donations decline during the holiday season.  At the same time, bad winter weather may lead to the cancellation or reduced attendance at scheduled blood drives.

“Supplies of many blood types are now at the critical 3-day level, with distribution restrictions on Type O, Rh negative blood,” said NJBS Executive Director Chuck Grossenbacher.

School Club Members Donate Blood to Save Lives—The Union Catholic High School Health Club, moderated by school nurse of 17 years, JoAnn Ball, hosted a blood drive in conjunction with along with New Jersey Blood Services on Dec. 16. Led by the Health Club’s executive officers, Jessica Gomez and Marina Saint Val (pictured left to right), the club successfully surpassed its goal of 40 donors which included outside members of the community as well. The Health Club will host its second and final blood drive of the school year on March 10. Blood Donors Also Asked To Contribute To NJ Food Banks

STATE—New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS) is on a mission to fill the shelves of New Jersey’s hospitals with blood before the holidays. At the same time, music icon Bruce Springsteen is on a similar mission to fill the shelves of the Community Food Banks of New Jersey.

So when The Boss talked…New Jersey Blood Services listened.

They’re asking every donor who saves a life by giving pint of blood between Dec. 1 and 14, to bring a non-perishable food donation to the blood drive where they donate.  Food donations will be accepted at the following local drives:

Blood Supply Dangerously Low

STATE—New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS), a division of New York Blood Center, is issuing a public appeal for blood due to critically low supplies in area hospitals.

New Jersey Blood Services, which supplies blood services and products to 60 hospitals throughout the state, says that the need for blood has increased beyond seasonal expectations.
