EDISON—Led by math teacher Benjamin Patiak, four students from The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison took part in a 14-hour mathematical modeling competition on Saturday, March 7. 

Christopher Georgevich of Elizabeth, Saheela Ibraheem of Piscataway, Manish Kewalramani of Edison and Sahil Zubair of Scotch Plains competed against students from Connecticut, Delaware, D.C., Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Rhode Island, and local New Jersey schools including East Brunswick High School, Perth Amboy High School, Piscataway High School, Westfield High School, Summit High School and more.

Patiak explained that “the Wardlaw-Hartridge team was charged with the 2009 M3 problem: ‘$787 Billion: Will the Stimulus Act Stimulate the U.S. Economy?’ The W-H team determined which among the elements of the $787 billion package are most likely to produce improvements in employment. They also need to know how quickly these elements would produce results and if there is a need for a second stimulus package.”

An Ancient Art Form—Beginning on Feb. 2, students at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison have been celebrating “World Languages Week” with unique activities which support an appreciation for diversity, global interconnection and cultures and traditions. On Monday, students focused on Chinese, followed by French on Tuesday, Spanish on Wednesday, Italian on Thursday and Latin on Friday. Hua Liu of East Brunswick, who instructs Mandarin Chinese at Wardlaw-Hartridge, taught sophomores, juniors and seniors about the ancient art form of Chinese calligraphy. Toys For Needy Girls And Boys—This holiday season, the Upper and Lower School students at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison ‘adopted’ families through Plainfield Action Services, Joy of Giving and collected clothing and toys for those families. Gooey Gourds—Fourth graders in Kathy Meier’s Lower School science class dissected pumpkins on Oct. 31 to start their plant unit in science tech. Haunting Prose—Joseph Alamo, a seventh grader at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison, captured the attention of judges with his playful and spooktacular prose and his poem won first place in the Middle School competition. He was awarded a basketful of Halloween treats by his English teacher, Corinna Crafton, before reciting the poem to his peers. Joseph is the son of Joseph and Maria Alamo of Roselle Park. Fingerprinting And Forensics—Students in Barbara Drake’s Introduction to Forensic Science class at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison furthered their study of fingerprinting on Oct. 30 when Edison Police detectives Ted Hamer and Matt Lechelt visited to fingerprint the class. After completing the fingerprint cards, the detectives addressed the class on the fingerprinting process, the state and FBI databases, the time it takes for electronic prints to be checked in the database, and why the portable ink is used in the field. The students questioned the detectives about latent prints and learned about “dusting for prints” and the new equipment that has made it nearly obsolete. EDISON— Lt. Scott Boland and firefighter Dan Maurath spoke to students from Wardlaw-Hartridge’s Lower School on Tuesday, Oct. 7, to educate them about fire safety. The assembly was organized by teacher Ellen Ritz.

Maurath and Boland reminded the students to call 9-1-1 in case of emergency, never play with matches, never play in the kitchen, never put anything in wall sockets and to diligently change smoke detectors in their homes. They also posed several “what would you do?” situations to the students, who proved by their answers that they are prepared and aware of what to do in case of a fire.

EDISON—On Friday, Oct. 3, The Wardlaw-Hartridge School hosted a forum on the upcoming presidential election. Edison Mayor Jun H. Choi, a Democrat, and Assemblyman Jon Bramnick (R-Union County) addressed the Upper School students and parents.

Choi focused on the campaign of Senator Barack Obama and the Democratic party, while Bramnick focused on the campaign of Senator John McCain and the Republican party. Both politicians also addressed the role of local politics in national issues. The forum was moderated by Andrew Webster, head of school.

Collection Of Hope—Shruti Nadkarni of Edison, a freshman at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison, spent her summer vacation conducting a food drive for Hands of Hope for the Community, an Edison-based food pantry/soup kitchen. Nadkarni set her goal of collecting 500 cans of food and planned a course of action, which included: preparing a PowerPoint presentation; presenting her PowerPoint program to various companies and organizations; organizing and monitoring the collection of food at the various locations; and collecting the food and delivering it to Hands of Hope. In the end, Nadkarni exceeded her goal and collected 650 cans! Mayoral Recognition—On Sept. 22, Edison Mayor Jun H. Choi, a first degree black belt, issued formal proclamations recognizing the achievements of Ricky Azari and Christopher Azari in Taekwondo. Ricky is a third grader and Christopher is a kindergartener at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison. Choi’s proclamation recognized the talented brothers as having demonstrated “outstanding physical fitness” and athletic excellence. Ricky and Christopher are the sons of Cyrus and Elizabeth Azari of Edison.
