CRANFORD—The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders in conjunction with presenting sponsor Overlook Hospital has confirmed two jam-packed days of music on three stages at MusicFest ‘08, including Everclear, who will headline Friday, Sept. 5, and The B-52’s, who will headline on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Nomahegan Park in Cranford.

Free to the public, the eleventh installment of this annual event will feature more than 20 performers, among them a contingent of rising musical stars from New Jersey on both days.

Homestead Rebate Checks On The Way

STATE—The New Jersey Division of Taxation began mailing more than 1.3 million Homestead Rebate checks on July 31 to eligible homeowners age 65 or older or disabled who filed their applications by June 2. The Division of Taxation has also started mailing rebates for eligible tenants of all ages. Applicants who submitted their application after the original deadline will receive their rebate checks as quickly as possible.

CARTERET—Representatives from Chick’s Holiday Time, Inc. joined Mayor Daniel J. Reiman last week to announce that construction has begun on the highly anticipated Burger Express.

The new business has been relocated from its former home on upper Roosevelt Avenue, where it was shut down through eminent domain by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in order to make room for the $130 million Turnpike Interchange 12 improvement project. The new Burger Express will be located at 215 Roosevelt Avenue.

ELIZABETH – A judge has sentenced an Elizabeth man with an extensive list of prior convictions to eight years in prison for his role in a drug conspiracy broken up last year by federal, county and local investigators.

PERTH AMBOY – The city will kick off its 325th anniversary celebration this weekend with a special Civil War remembrance program in Bayview Park.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, the First Infantry Regular Army Unit – a group of Civil War re-enactors – will stage an encampment, starting at 1 p.m. Visitors can learn about the life of a typical soldier (North or South) – what they ate, how they lived, what medicines and surgeries were available to them – during perhaps the most awful conflict the nation has ever faced. There will be a concert of Civil War-era music, played by the New Jersey Symphonic Band under the direction of Chris Petersen, following the encampment.
