SOUTH AMBOY—Here is another “cleaning out my folders” column from my own research: The Long Ferry at the foot of High Street in Perth Amboy that went from South Amboy to Perth Amboy started in 1684. The South Amboy ferry was put out of business by bridges.
In 1832, John Stevens built the first railroad in New Jersey running between Camden and South Amboy. A ferry carried travelers from South Amboy to Perth Amboy where they had dinner before proceeding to New York or returned to Philadelphia.
In 1925, The South Amboy Trust Company had D.W. Reed as its president and H.G. Hoffman as its treasurer. In 1942, South Amboy had a Camera Club.
A South Amboy resident remembers when a man came door-to-door to sharpen your scissors and knives.
Does anyone from any of the towns remember who came around your town door-to-door or street peddlers who came around with their goods or services? Please let me know for a future column.
Many may remember I started my writing of the past in South Amboy by researching and writing the “History of the Bars in South Amboy” almost 11 years ago. Here are the members of the South Amboy Taverns Association in 1972: Anabel’s Tavern, Bottle Stop Inn, Brothers Inn, Brave Bull, Club 500, Corner Pub, Colonel Garter, Clover Leaf Lounge, Frank’s Café, Gaslight Inn, Gay 90s, John’s Halfway House, Martin & Millie’s Bar, Mike’s Tavern, Ogan’s Lounge, Pied Piper, The Place, Pelican’s Tavern, Rodd’s Tavern and White Eagle. In 1975 the members were: Anabel’s Tavern, Angie’s Lounge, Brave Bull, Bob’s 2×4, Brother III, Colonel Garter, Corner Pub, Edge Lounge, Frank’s Café, Gay 90s, Mike’s Tavern, My Wife’s Place, Nolan’s Sligo House, Ogan’s Tavern, Polka Club and The Place. If anyone has information on Angie’s Lounge from this time—location, owner, etc.—please let me know.
If any reader from any town has names, locations, owners, memories or past information for any past bar or history of present bars please let me know for future columns in 2009.
