CLARK – Two township schools received funding under the Union County Green Grant for “radical recycling” efforts. The grants were distributed at an awards ceremony at Magnet High School in Scotch Plains on Jan. 14.

Valley Road Elementary School and Kumpf Middle School were among five county schools to qualify for the awards from the Green Grant program, which was started in 2008 by Union County Freeholder Angel G. Estrada as part of the county’s Go Green initiative.

“I would like to congratulate the awardees, and also to extend my appreciation to all of the schools that submitted applications,” said Estrada. “With your creativity and can-do spirit, you have all shown that a little goes a long way when it comes to going green.”

contact-we-careWESTFIELD—CONTACT We Care, a 24-hour caring and crisis hotline, will hold an open house on Monday, Feb. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 170 Elm Street, Westfield.  The general public is invited to attend to learn more about volunteer opportunities with the award-winning organization.  

The 33-year-old non-profit organization, devoted to offering the gift of listening to callers in need, has trained more than 1,000 volunteers since it first opened its doors in 1975.  The next training class will begin on Monday, Feb. 23, in Westfield.

entertainerRAHWAY—The Rahway Recreation Department is looking for talented individuals ages 8 to adults to participate in the annual talent show scheduled on Thursday, April 2, at the Union County Performing Arts Center.

Organizers are looking for singers, dancers, rappers, bands, comedians and any other acts. Auditions for the show are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 30, starting at 6 p.m. at the Rahway Recreation Center, 275 Milton Avenue (Behind Rahway City Hall). There is no fee to participate. To obtain an application, call 732-669-3600 or stop by the Recreation Center to pick one up.
