COLONIA—Ayna Agarwal, a member of the Community Campus Edison Branch YMCA, has been named a top runner-up for “The 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Award” in New Jersey. Agarwal also qualified for the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation and the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which is based on the number of volunteer hours she has dedicated to her community and her country.
Agarwal, 16, of Colonia, is working internationally to reduce the number of homeless animals and improve their lives. She has raised money to spay and neuter pets and to provide expanded pet care facilities in third world countries, created and distributed informational flyers, produced a documentary film, recruited volunteers and organized a summer camp that engages young children in activities benefiting homeless animals. She presented her program at the Edison Branch YMCA Day Camp at Oakcrest this past summer.
Agarwal received an award certificate and a letter from the President and will also receive an engraved bronze Distinguished Finalist medallion to commemorate this award.
