Inside_the_Statehouseby Assemblyman Joseph Vas

In my years of public service, one thing always remains the same: When times are good, the public generally asks government to limit its influence, but when rough economic times hit the public often turns to the government for answers. Today we find ourselves in the midst of a sobering economic recession and many New Jerseyans are turning to their representatives for help. I understand and see first hand the struggles that families are facing and have been honored to answer that call.

As Assemblyman for the 19th Legislative District, I promised to serve as your eyes and ears in Trenton. This past weekend, I brought the best of Trenton to you. We often hear about the wide array of government services available. However, sometimes we run into bureaucratic roadblocks and do not know how to access these services. Sacrifice, determination and hard work are the essentials for the success of every basketball player.

On the hardwood, every player must understand their role. All five players must work together as a unit to achieve their goal on the court. A player must be ready at all times because he may never know when his number will be called to move up from sub to starter.

More recently, sophomore Michael Gilchrist broke his leg. Strickland, who committed to North Carolina, is back; Gilchrist, the number three-ranked sophomore by Rivals, will not participate in the Union County Tournament and may the miss the rest of the season.

money-07By Felix Ramirez, The Tax Group

This headline was just received from the IRS. According to the note from the IRS, “Unclaimed refunds totaling approximately $1.3 billion are awaiting over a million people who did not file a federal income tax return for 2005, the Internal Revenue Service announced today. However, to collect the money, a return for 2005 must be filed with the IRS no later than Tuesday, April 15, 2009.”

It is a well known fact that many people do not file their tax returns. The IRS is reaching out to people asking them to review their records to make sure they don’t leave money on the table in these tough economic times. There are a total of 1,343,000 individuals who may get a refund just by claiming it through their filing. Of that total, 41,000 individuals live in NJ and have the potential of receiving more than $43 million dollars in refunds.
