Remembering the Past by Diane Norek Harrisonby Diane Norek Harrison

SOUTH AMBOY-Back in 2001, I was given the history of the Bells of St. Nicholas, the electric, automatic Christmas tree bells manufactured by the E.J Nicorvo MFG. Corp. of South Amboy in 1948. They were made at 210 North Broadway. I had the history in a column in another publication. Here’s a picture of the box, which belongs to my set of the Bells of St. Nicholas.

Shoes For Christmas

by Paul Z. Myers

Lots of people complained that throwing shoes at the president was an act of violence, and therefore beyond the pale of what should be allowed. I think they’re wrong, that it’s a harmless expression of naked contempt, and that there ought to be more contempt expressed towards this president, but let’s compromise. No throwing shoes. How about politely handing them to him?

The Rude Pundit had a brilliant and obvious idea.

This morning, the Rude Pundit decided to honor the efforts of Muntader al-Zaidi, the Iraqi shoe-tosser, by taking out a raggedy old pair of sneakers, putting them in a Priority Mail shipping box, helpfully provided by the United States Post Office, and shipping them to President George W. Bush at the White House. He included a note that read, “This is a farewell kiss from the American people, you dog.”

Remembering the Past by Diane Norek HarrisonBy Diane Norek Harrison

ELIZABETH-Here are more Christmas memories “as seen through the eyes of a young child” from reader William Frolich:

“We were aware of Santa Claus and his elves at the North Pole, but how did he make all those visits to everyone’s house all in one night? In the streets downtown his helpers were busy with their bells and kettles, so who was still at work making the toys? Would they make enough for all the children? We assured that everything would turn out alright.

FLORHAM PARK—AAA projects a slight decline in the number of Americans traveling during the Christmas holiday period (Dec. 19 – 31).  Nearly 63.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home, approximately 1.4 million (2.1 percent) fewer than last year’s total of 65.3 million.  This represents the first decline in Christmas holiday travel in six years.  AAA has projected year-to-year decreases in the number of travelers for all the major driving holidays in 2008 (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas).

“The current economic landscape has caused many people to rethink how they spend their money,” said Rick Zeckendorf, vice president of travel services for the AAA New Jersey Automobile Club.  “Money that would have ordinarily been spent on travel is now being used for other expenses and, as a result, people are exhibiting caution when deciding how to spend their available dollars.”
