basketball-equipment-03CRANFORD – On Sunday, March 1, the Union County College Lady Owls Basketball Team secured the Region XIX championship title, with a win over Delaware Tech by a score of 64-56 at the County College of Morris.

Delaware Tech started the game very aggressively, pulling ahead by 10 points at the beginning of the first half. However, by halftime, The Owls rallied to come out front by a score of 29-27. Delaware attempted to keep the second half of the game close, however, they could not contain The Lady Owl’s scoring streak. For the night, Lady Owl, Nicole Lilenfeld, finished with 22 points, 6 assists, and 4 steal; Kianna Williamson with 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocks; and Crystal Harris who had 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

basketball-equipment-03CRANFORD—Union County College’s women’s basketball team has completed their best season ever, with an undefeated record of 24 wins and no losses. The only scholarship team at the college, the Lady Owls ended their season with a win over Burlington County College on Saturday, Feb. 14, with a 90-84 score.

UCC held a 56-39 lead at halftime and even though the Barons attempted a comeback they could not contend with the UCC scoring. Crystal Harris, of Jersey City, had 28 points, 19 rebounds, 7 blocks, and 3 steals; Nicole Lilenfeld, of Piscataway, had 18 points, 6 assists, and 6 steals; Bobbi Van Fleet, of Plainfield, contributed with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks; and Martyna Ruminska, of Kearny, finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. This is the first time in the college’s history that the women’s basketball had an undefeated season.

Most Knicks fans are hoping that Derrick Rose is available in next month’s NBA Draft. The Memphis guard led the Tigers to the championship game. Enter Tyreke Evans to fill the void left by Rose’s departure after his freshman year. Evans had his pick of most of the best colleges in the country.

Lance Stephenson from Lincoln High School in Brooklyn is the next guard sensation to come out of New York. Local schools like LIU and St. Francis of New York are not on his short or long list of schools. Trying to find the diamonds in the rough, third year coach Brian Nash knows the likelyhood that Stephenson will commit to the Brooklyn school is highly unlikely, but that does not stop Nash from his passion for the game or the job that he loves.

Union County College knew that they could outscore their opponents. This year team did do that, but on the other end of the court, the Owls still had offense on their mind and let their opponents outscore them.

“We did develop the defense mind and I haven’t instilled it in the players” said Coach Joe Scott. The culmination of the lack of defense came when Union County lost to Rockland County, NY 111-107. Scott scolded his team and told them “I can’t believe a watched a college team score 107 points and lose.” The Owls also beat Bronx Community College 117-100. “We felt they can outscore anybody” said Scott.
