Remembering The Troops At Christmas—Students in Linda Lampert’s second grade class at Franklin School in Rahway enjoyed writing letters and making ‘Get Well Soon’ and ‘Christmas’ cards for wounded American soldiers.  The students are hoping that their cards will cheer them up and bring a smile to their faces.  If you would are interested in sending a card this holiday season, you may do so and mail it to: A Recovering American Soldier, c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20307-5001.

After watching a video presented by Sparky the Fire Dog on fire safety, the kindergartners went outside to get a close view of a fire truck and to receive additional fire safety information. franklin-school-students-give2thetroops-111408Franklin School Students Give2TheTroops—Students at Franklin School in Rahway held a school-wide community service project where students brought in items for individuals serving in the armed forces. The school donated items through an organization called Give2TheTroops, a nationwide charitable organization serving deployed and wounded troops. Give2TheTroops’s goal is to support the physical, moral and spiritual health through providing letters and care packages. Through Franklin School’s strong participation, over 600 items were collected and donated. The school’s Blue and Gold Club, facilitated by Valerie Oliver and Raffaella Nicoll, played a strong part in the collection and organization of the items before they were delivered to Give2TheTroops. Because of Franklin School’s strong commitment to supporting troops, the school was visited by Captain Ryan VanVeelan, a helicopter pilot for the United States Air Force. VanVeelan spoke to students about his experiences in Iraq and his responsibilities as a helicopter pilot. Pictured here, fifth grade students Evans and Seiry, from Venisha Jordan’s fifth grade class, show off some of VanVeelan’s equipment.

Playing Their Parts — The students from the Blue and Gold club at Franklin School in Rahway worked hard preparing for Franklin School’s mock presidential debate. Travis James played the part of Barack Obama and Sean Penaranda played the part of John McCain. The students presented valuable information to the student body in order to inform students about the presidential candidates and what they stand for.
